How to Hightail

Make the most of file previews – now including CAD

Did you know that anyone you share files with can now preview or stream those files—even if they don’t have a Hightail account?

Now everyone that you share files with will see the same great full-size previews of those files, as shown below.

There’s no more requirement to register for a Hightail account or to download the files in order to view them. And we’ve even recently added the ability to preview CAD files, even if CAD software isn’t installed on your computer.

The previewing feature is also handy if you would like someone to be able to view a file, but don’t want them to have access to download that file. (If a file has copyright or legal distribution restrictions, for example.) Simply select the option to prevent the file downloads and they will only have access to the file previews or video streams—and won’t be able to download a local copy to their computer.

In addition to CAD (.dwg and .dxf formats), Hightail can preview and stream a large range of file formats:

  • Image extensions, including .bmp .jpg .jpeg .png .gif .tif .tiff .ico .icns .psd
  • Video extensions, including.3gp .3gpp .asf .avi .divx .dv .flc .flv .m4v .mkv .mov .mp4 .mpe .mpeg .mpg .mxf .ogv .qt .rm .ts .vob .webm .wmv. (For more on collaborating on image and video files, watch our short how-to video.)
  • Audio extensions, including .aac .aif .aifc .aiff .flac .m4a .mka .mp3 .oga .ogg .ra .wav .wma (For more on working with audio files, you can read our post on “4 steps for speedy podcast production.”)
  • Document/PDF/Presentation extensions, including .pdf .pptx .ppt .key .docx .txt .rtf.

Have a format that isn’t represented? You can keep an eye out for updates to our supported file preview formats or contact our support team for more information.
