Lance HudsonTool tips is a regular series where Hightail employees share their life’s most essential apps, online services and websites. Next up is Automation Engineer, Lance Hudson.

Working tool
I spend most of my time looking at or editing files of all types. For that I always turn to Atom. Made by GitHub, I love how extendable it is. I have plugins that help me write code, document code, format and color code. I even have a plugin that lets me share my coding session with a coworker.

FamiLAB is a local hackerspace or makerspace where I have been a member for two years. It allows me to collaborate with others on all the weird ideas or projects that I come up with. I have worked on Power Wheels-sized electric cars, Internet of Things sensors and controls and quadcopters. If this sounds like it’s for you, simply find a local hackerspace and start making.

General resource
For my daily news and updates I use Reddit. It allows me to organize a bunch of subreddits (bulletin board for a topic) into categories called multireddits. I have created multireddits on topics related to work like information security and Docker, as well as topics for fun like anime, book recommendations and my current favorite video game, Elite Dangerous.
